As you all may know, China is infamous for it’s numerous counterfeit products. Electronics, designer clothing, toys and others. But did you know they make fake eggs too?

A user on kds.pchome.net posted a couple of pictures and videos of some fake eggs he got. Well, at least he thinks they are fake eggs. From the pictures, they certainly look like real eggs. They’ve got the shells, whites, and yolk but they contain loads of toxins and “can cause people to become idiotic” (engrish translation).

I wasn’t entirely convinced so I did some googling. The first hit was hoax-slayer.com. The article actually contained a lot of information about the whole fake eggs thing. Apparently they can cause dementia because of the alum content.

Then I found this wordpress blog with pictures that showed the process of making fake eggs.

They’re made from calcium carbonate, starch, resin, gelatin, and other chemicals. The process for making them looks pretty difficult.

I guess they were making these fake eggs was cause of money. The cost of fake eggs is 0.55 Yuan/ kg, while real eggs are 5.6 Yuan/kg. That’s like a tenfold difference.

The lengths people go to just to make a couple extra dollars. It’s incredible.
