I wish they had this in America. You know...Sometimes when I forget my ticket on the LIRR or subway, I just give the dude the octopus that I always keep in my pocket.

Yay, Hong Kong represent! Now, HK is trying to deal with Octopus company to actually make Octopus the new 'ATM' card. I mean you could always use the Octopus card to pay for other things like, taxi rides, 7/11, etc.
We semi have a equivalent thing here in NY, just that we don't use it as often. Chase for example has 'blink' and it's accepted in yellow cabs in the city, and also in MTA train stations. I just recently used it at ShopRite.
Boston has something like 'octopus' too but Boston's transit system is definitely smaller than what we have here in NY.
guangzhou's is 'goat city card' ^^
