Just came back from watching Star Trek. It was okay. Spoilers ahead?

The cast and acting was good, though whenever Zachary Quinto appeared on screen I kept picturing him cutting people’s heads open with telekinesis. The action and special effects were great too. Lots of laser shooting here, hand to hand combat there, huge explosions everywhere. JJ Abrams didn’t make a bad movie.

Here’s what made Star Trek only an okay movie for me. Eric Bana’s character, Nero, is probably the worst evil villain of all evil villains ever. Ok so he blew up a couple ships and destroyed a planet. So what? The whole “I want revenge cause Spock promised to save my planet but he didn’t make it in time so now I’m gonna destroy his planet just cause I’m a little crybaby asshole” reason didn’t make any sense. It definitely was not just cause for Nero to do what he did. Maybe it’s because there wasn’t enough time to flesh out his story but I think the evil villain in movies should definitely be more evil than this Nero guy. Nero seemed like a kid that was throwing a tantrum cause mommy took away his toy.

Oh and not to mention the shaky cam. There was lots of shaky cam. Not regular shaky cam either. It was HYPER SHAKY CAM. HYPER EXCESSIVE MOTION SICKNESS-INDUCING SHAKY CAM. Seriously, there was even shaky cam in the dialog sequences. It makes you wonder if the camera was held by a man with a serious case of Parkinson’s.

A lot of people are really loving this movie but I’m gonna have to say Star Trek was only okay. It just didn’t feel, for lack of a better word, epic. I don’t know how else to explain it. You would expect something like battles with lasers and explosions in the vastness of space to be completely epic but it’s not the case here.

Star Trek is by no means a boring movie. In fact, its the opposite being both entertaining and enjoyable. It is a movie you should definitely go out and watch but don’t expect something of The Dark Knight caliber. It was Star Trek’s minor flaws that ruined it for me.
