Terraforming actually means to modify and change another planet into an "earth-life" place. I was watching this documentary and I had never heard of this idea before. The fact is that if humans want to strive and live on for billions of years, we will eventually have to leave planet Earth (within approx. the next 5 billion years) because the sun will continue to grow into a red giant, and will most probably turn the Earth into a fireball. Mars, on the other hand, has a good chance it will survive. Humans will have to become a spacefaring civilization, just like in StarCraft!
Everyone always thinks Humans will be the first kind of life that will land on mars, but this idea is different. Terraforming is the idea of sending plants, which can live under harsh conditions (such as algae), onto Mars before humans actually arrive. The plants will be sent there ahead of time so we can actually pump oxygen into the atmosphere of Mars, to make it breathable. Right now, Mars is a freezing wasteland and the algae won't be able to survive in those temperatures, so, we'll do what we know how to do best. We will cause global warming on Mars by sending "pollution machines". When the Red Planet is warm enough to keep the plants alive, we send the plants and make oxygen. It's a cool theory. Watch the documentary below to better understand the idea:
